rabbit hole

chasing a rabbit into a hole
it's taken its tole
so I'm turning pages
leaving stages
that actors tread
full of bombast and howling
incessant growling
playing with dread

sometimes seems shiny and bright
shimmering light
like crystalline chalice
full of malice
drink down dear Alice
it will make you large
you'll be in charge

but come to find
what's lurking behind
is not shadow benign
but miasma entwined
in trinkets of rhyme
which appear with rapidity
steeped in morbidity
with regular chime

tell me sweet Alice
you've emptied your chalice
and dear have you grown?
instead did it induce
your view to reduce
to that of a gnome?

just what have you sown?

what if in turn
you it would spurn
and leave you grow old
in dark so cold
when you thought it would wrought
the glory you sought

except now you've been sold?

but at what price
this heart full of ice
slave to dramatic device
what did it all mean
this strut forth and preen
which did so entice

a roll of the dice?

after all this fanfare
there's nothing to bear
it lacks for an heir
to be seen anywhere
no future to hold
nothing foretold

what did it all mean?

as seasons follow
this vessel stays hollow
no goods does it carry
no reason to tarry
on its sordid scheme

was it just a bad dream?

what did it all mean?
